Hugo Awards Logo Design Contest

The Hugo Awards, to give them their full title, are awards for excellence in the field of science fiction and fantasy. They were first awarded in 1953, and have been awarded every year since 1955. The awards are run by and voted on by fans.

You can become a part of Worldcon history by designing the official logo for The Hugo Award. Although the rocket atop the Hugo Award has been one of the most visible signs of excellence in science fiction and fantasy for more than fifty years, there has never been an official logo to designate works as Hugo Award nominees or winners. The World Science Fiction Society now aims to change that by soliciting designs for such a logo, with the winning design to be the official logo suitable for use in the publishing and film/television industries.
Prizes
The designer of the winning entry will receive a $500 cash prize (sponsored by SCIFI), a glass trophy featuring the winning design, a membership to an upcoming Worldcon, signed copies of Neil Gaiman’s Hugo Award-winning novel American Gods and novella Coraline and the collection Fragile Things, including the Hugo Award-winning short story “A Study in Emerald.” The winning designer will also have the right to use the logo and identify him/herself as its creator.

8th poster competition of the island of Ithaca, Greece.

Theme: I

1st prize 1000 €, 2nd prize 600 €, 3rd prize 500 €

Deadline: 20 May 2009

Size: Height 40cm (15,75"), Width 12cm (4,73") 

“I”. A “portrait” of myself. What do I see if I stand in front of a mirror? How do I see myself? How do others see me? What image would best represent me? What image would best represent my personal, social or political identity, my inspirations, my habits or my travels? 

All of the above are just a few of the many ways one can approach this year’s competition theme “I”.

The ten best entries will be printed into banners with dimensions 200 x 60 cm and will be hung along Ithaca’s promenade for the entire summer of 2009. Their creators will have free accommodation in Ithaca on the weekend of the exhibition’s opening (July 2009).

Each individual or group may submit up to two posters. In order to enter the competition, each artist has to submit their poster through this website. Each piece must have dimensions of 40cm height x 12cm width (15,75’’ height x 4.73’’ width) and must be uploaded as an electronic JPEG file, resolution 360 dpi, maximum file size 10 MB. 

Entries can be uploaded until the 20th of May 2009. 

Fimios has the right to change, postpone or cancel the competition without prior notification. Works will be kept at Fimios posters archive. The winners will be notified via e-mail. Participation in the competition requires acceptance of these terms.

Παρασκευή 24 Απριλίου στο ΑΤΤΙΚΟΝ CINEMAX CLASS η τελετή απονομής των ΕΒΓΕ 2009

Η 8η ετήσια διοργάνωση των Ελληνικών Βραβείων Γραφιστικής και Εικονογράφησης (ΕΒΓΕ) θα κορυφωθεί με την τελετή απονομής, η οποία θα πραγματοποιηθεί στην Αθήνα την Παρασκευή 24 Απριλίου (ώρα έναρξης: 7.30 μ.μ.) στο ΑΤΤΙΚΟΝ CINEMAX CLASS (Σταδίου 19). Καταξιωμένοι, αλλά και νέοι δημιουργοί από όλο το φάσμα της ελληνικής γραφιστικής κοινότητας συμμετείχαν στα φετινά Βραβεία προκειμένου να διαγωνιστούν σε 32 κατηγορίες που κάλυπταν όλο το φάσμα της οπτικής και έντυπης επικοινωνίας (Γραφιστική - Διαδίκτυο - Εικονογράφηση). Στο σημείο αυτό αξίζει να σημειώσουμε πως και τα φετινά ΕΒΓΕ υποστηρίζονται από το Διεθνές Συμβούλιο Γραφιστικών Ενώσεων (ICOGRADA) καθώς και από την Ένωση Γραφιστών Ελλάδας (Ε.Γ.Ε.)Μέσα από την ιστοσελίδα των ΕΒΓΕ (http://www.ebge.gr) οι επισκέπτες μπορούν τόσο να ενημερωθούν για την τελετή απονομής, όσο και να προχωρήσουν στην κράτηση και αγορά της θέσης τους μέσω του online καταστήματος τoυ περιοδικού +design (http://www.designerstribe.com). Tullio Pericoli's Portraits

I absolutely love Tullio Pericoli's portraits. Last year when I visited my frind Duska in Milan she told me that there is a book with his portraits. After a long search I managed to find one last, thorn and a little dirty copy of this book in one fancy bookstore. The lady at a shop offered a discount because of that, she did not know I would have payed 3 times the price for it.
After seeing the drawings agin and again I find myself asking the question: How does he dare to draw it this way? Many things seem wrong at a first glance (see the eyes of Callas and Verlaine) and they are so right!
Seeing this portrait of Luciano Berio in the book I got intrigued how does he look like, searched and found few fotos... I am not sure I can explain it, but this drawing does show the person, it does not just look like him, it reflects the feeling one gets looking at the photo.

Anna Notara Koutroumpaki wins the UNESCO's Design Competition

The winning entry of DESIGN 21’s Languages Matter! competition was chosen by UNESCO judges: Daniel Prado, director of Terminology and Language Industries in Argentina, and Adama Samassékou, secretary general of the African Academy of Languages in Mali. After reviewing all the entries, they selected Communication Designer Anna Notara Koutroumpaki from Greece for her “Mother Language Must Live” design. “This poster is readable by all world cultures,” notes UNESCO. It was chosen because “the public will recognize the author’s intention to put at the same level the different peoples and thus the variety of their languages.”
